Petaluma Painter Born in Petaluma in 1915, Lewis Barber has been painting since 1937. His simple, serene, primitive style is indicative of his easy and outgoing nature. His paintings invite the viewer to sit down and look at everyday scenes which surround us; scenes that, too often, we don't see or have the time to enjoy.

| I visited Mr. Barber at his studio recently to take these pictures of his paintings. We talked about painting, the beauty of Sonoma County's rural roads, its small towns, and about neon signs! It so happens that some 50 years ago Lewis made neon signs. "I made the first neon sign in Petaluma," Lewis says. "It was for Linch Jewelers on Western Avenue." To Lewis' credit, the sign is still there and it still works! |
