History The Petaluma River was first discovered by Europeans when the crew of the San Carlos arrived in 1776. By 1849, most of the Native Americans, inhabitants of the land for at least ten thousand years, had been displaced as the town became a center of commerce for the farmers and gold miners moving into the area. For the next century, the river played a major role in the economics of the region.
