History The Temperance Movement, which encouraged abstinence from alcohol, was long-lived in Petaluma, but was not very effective. This stone water fountain was erected by Petaluma's Temperance Union in 1891. One of the four original hotels built in Petaluma was opened as a "dry" hotel, but was quickly sold for lack of business. The fountain, by the way, is also dry today!
