Stories This facsimile of an El Camino Real Mission bell marks the original path taken by Padre Jose Altamira in 1823 while searching for a suitable location for California's twenty-first mission. The El Camino Real went directly through the Indian settlement which predated the founding of the town by thousands of years. Later, the Camino became Main Street after the town's first buildings were erected.
