The Haystack Railway connected downtown Petaluma with the ferry dock at the camp of Haystack, three miles down the Petaluma River. Originally the line had a twenty-six horsepower steam engine, which blew up two years after service began. Afterwards, the railcars were pulled by teams of mules, and the line became known as the Muleroad.
